Condition Report: The edges show some losses. The right corners are scuffed. The left side corners are lacking. The painting is stained and pitted. This is most noticeable to the clearer areas of the work : the sky, the well and some garments. The narrow speckled margins are in good condition. The rectangular calligraphic panels are stained and lightly smudged. As can be seen in the catalogue and website illustrations, the wide borders shows some losses and water staining overall. Their lower edges presents some remnants of dried glue. The reverse is stained and pitted. A remnant of modern brown tape is still attached tot he lower right corner.

Footnotes: The Battle of Chamkaur, also known as Battle of Chamkaur Sahib, was a battle fought between the Khalsa, led by Guru Gobind Singh, and the coalition forces of the Mughals led by Wazir Khan and of Hindu hill chief. After Guru Gobind Singh left Anandpur Sahib on the night of 5 and 6 December 1704 he crossed the Sarsa river with his disciples. While they were crossing, the Mughals and hill chiefs attacked. Guru Gobind Singh and his followers asked permission of the city chief for shelter to rest for the night in their garhi or haveli. He refused, but his younger brother allowed the Sikhs to stay in the haveli.

Condition Report: Corners scuffed or lacking. Dull pigments overall with scattered losses especially noticeable to the sitter's halo. The white and green pigments have lifted off. This is mostly noticeable in areas of the upper band of the sky and of the floral lattice, especially to the lower left corner. As can be seen on the website illustrations, further losses can be seen to the added borders. The borders have been pasted to the reverse of the painting.

Note: A very similar panel is in the L. A. Mayer Memorial Museum, Jerusalem (T 432) published in Rachel Hasson, 'A Tall Tale', Hali 69, June/July 1993, pp.96-7). It was described at some length, the iconography identified as coming from the Persian writer Al-Qazwini’s ‘Aja’ib al’Makhluqat wa Ghara ‘ib al-Mawjudat (Wonders of Creation), and catalogued as Safavid. Its appearance drew out two further examples, the present panel, and a fragment with the dealer Erol Kazanci in Istanbul. Rachel Hasson, when she published the George Farrow example in a subsequent Hali article, identified it as a Royal commission, being the most complex example of the three, and containing one extra row of figures ('A Tale of Three Velvets', Hali 72, December 1993 / January 1994, p.69).
There are a number of related velvets which are generally dated to the later Safavid period, each of which has rows of figures, usually arranged in symmetrical groups. Two are in the Keir Collection (Friedrich Spuhler, Islamic Carpets and Textiles in the Keir Collection, London, 1978, nos.112 and 114. A velvet that at one stage was in the Kelekian collection provides an earlier version of the design (Arthur Upham Pope, A Survey of Persian Art, Oxford, 1938, pl.1038a). Scattered with staggered figures and trees, including a kneeling piper, it shows how the present very formalised design had its roots in a different earlier aesthetic.

Condition Report: The painting starts to slightly lifting off from the card. It creates small creases to its edges, a third way up. Some droplet stains left some light marks around the main sitter's lower body and to its tunic, notably under the actual right armpit. The white pigments of his face shows some hair cracks. The borders have dulled, possibly due to being exposed to light. The gold or yellow metal that speckled the margins has corroded and turned into a hue of orange. The frames is in poor condition and would benefit form being repaired.

Note: Elahi Bukhsh Mutea was taught by the calligrapher Syed Anwer Husain Nafees Raqam, and is himself now visiting teacher of calligraphy to Islamabad and Rawalpindi Art Council. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the first prize in the All-Pakistan Exhibition of Calligraphy, held by the National Council of Arts, Islamabad, 1998, the second prize for calligraphy in the International Competition for Painting and Calligraphy, Iran 1989, and the Special Prize for Khat-e-Naskh, awarded by the Punjab Arts Council, Lahore 1999. His work is in several public collections, including the British Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art, Dubai, and the National Art Gallery, Islamabad.

Note : Having been influenced by Italian velvets in an earlier era (16th-17th Centuries), Ottoman velvets in turn provided inspiration for Italian designs at turn of the 20th Century, such as those of Mariano Fortuny. Venice, with its centuries of trade with the Mamluks and Ottomans, played a crucial role in the silk industry and a large number of Ottoman-style velvets were produced there from the 16th Century onwards, causing confusion amongst scholars. See Stefano Carboni (ed.), Venice and the Islamic World, Paris 2006, pp. 183ff. In this case, the relatively pale colour palette and smoothness of the voided areas are considerably different from Turkish work.

Condition Report: The edges are in fair condition although some very minimal losses can be seen, especially tot he left edge - perhaps the remnants of former binding perforations -. Another pinhole is near the centre of the upper edge. The corners are lightly scuffed. The upper corners are showing creases and ford marks, possibly a result of the work being previously mounted as a noticeable remnant of glue and card behind the upper right corner would suggest. Another noticeable fold mark can be noticed int he lower third of the right margins.The speckled panels are lightly tarnished. The quatrain's lines shows some occasional smudges. The plain reverse lightly stained.

The upper text panel consists of a couplet from Hilali Astarabadi's Shah u Darwish (The King and the Dervish), while the lower has a couplet from Nizami's Makhzan al-Asrar. The short inscription in the left-hand border has not been deciphered. Both couplets are on the power of the word, and are therefore appropriate for a depiction of a youth reading.
