Royal Scots regimental interest: A George V two-handled tea tray By Fenton, Russell & Co Ltd, Sheffield, 1914 Oval and with shaped moulded edge, engraved with the badge of the Royal Scots, and a dedication to Colonel W Gemmill D.S.O. from the 'old crowd' on the occasion of his marriage, 21st October 1915, together with numerous facsimile signatures, 59cm across the handles, 79oz; together with coffee pot engraved with the badge of the Royal Scots, Sheffield, 1908, a Victorian mug, London 1842, later engraved 'John David Gemmill, 1942', an engine-turned cigarette case engraved with presentation inscription to J D Evans, 1938 and an escutcheon removed from an item presented to Col Gemmell on the occasion of his marriage, total weight 102oz. (5) Footnotes: Educated at George Watson's College, Lieutenant Colonel Bill Gemmill, DSO, was the second son of farmer William Gemmill, of Greendykes, Macmerry, East Lothian. He was a prominent county agriculturalist and described as a very public-spirited man. A veteran of the Boer War, Colonel Gemmill was in command of a battalion of the Royal Scots in 1918 when he was killed during fighting at the age of 41. At the time, an officer of the battalion wrote: 'The worst blow of all was the loss of our gallant colonel. He was a topper – absolutely cool all the time, and a fighter.
