Hardie’s work is in private and public collections such as The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Council, London, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Modern Collection, Lisbon. Her work has been reviewed by Visual Art Source, The Semi-Finalist, Art In America, The New York Times, The Glasgow Herald, The New Yorker, The Scotsman, and The Independent among others.. Hardie has received Fellowships at The Bogliasco Foundation, Genoa, Italy, VCCA, MacDowell and Yaddo in the USA.

* BARBARA RAE CBE RA RSA RE (SCOTTISH b. 1943), HIGHLAND FENCE limited edition etching and aquatint on paper, signed, titled, dated '93 and dated 20/40 mounted, framed and under glass image size 40cm x 45cm, overall size 71cm x 76cm Note: Painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Stirlingshire. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1961–5 concluding with postgraduate study, in 1966 using a travelling scholarship to work in France and Spain. In 1966–7 was at Moray House College of Education, then taught in Edinburgh Schools until appointments 1972–4 at Aberdeen College of Education, then from 1975 at Glasgow School of Art. In 1984 she was an exchange teacher at University of Maryland. Won a number of awards and prizes, including Arts Council Awards and RSA Guthrie Award and Medal. In 1985 she gained a Scottish Arts Council Grant which permitted her to paint in Spain and New Mexico. Rae was an extremely prolific exhibitor internationally and from 1967, when she had her first solo show at New 57 Gallery, in Edinburgh, was regular at venues including Aberdeen Art Gallery; Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh and London; and Glasgow Print Studio. Her work is in several dozen collections, including Aberdeen Art Gallery, University of Glasgow and British Museum. Rae was a striking landscape painter with a rich palette, yet her pictures sometimes have an intense, brooding quality. Was elected RSA, and RA in 1996. Over the next few years Rae travelled extensively and in 2002 had a residency at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, County Mayo, Ireland. The North House Gallery, Manningtree, put on Barbara Rae Ten Years’ Printmaking in 2004, the first such major survey. In the same year she had a solo show at Tom Caldwell Gallery, Belfast, with another, Mayo, of monotypes and colour etchings in 2006. In 2003, Aberdeen University conferred an Hon. Doctorate on Rae and the Royal College of Art an Hon. Fellowship.

* JACK VETTRIANO (SCOTTISH b. 1951), YESTERDAY'S DREAMS limited edition print on paper, signed and numbered 311/350 mounted, framed and under glass image size 49cm x 40cm, overall size 73cm x 62cm Note: Jack Vettriano was born in Fife, Scotland in 1951. After leaving school at 15, he followed his father down the mine, working as an apprentice engineer. He later moved on to white-collar jobs in management services. Vettriano took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s when a girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his birthday and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. He learned his craft by copying Old Masters, Impressionists, Surrealists and a plethora of Scottish artists. Prior to moving from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh, he decided to mark a break with his past work which hitherto had been sold under his family name Hoggan. From this time on, he adopted his mother’s maiden name. The turning point came in 1988 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition; both were sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries. He held his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Gallery in 1992 entitled ‘Tales of Love and Other Stories’ and later that year, he exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London. He was represented by Portland Gallery from 1994-2007 and during this time, he had many sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York and counts Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Fergusson and Sir Tim Rice amongst his collectors. In 1996, Pavilion books commissioned W. Gordon Smith to compile an anthology, ‘Fallen Angels’, in which over 40 Vettriano images were accompanied by a selection of Scottish writing. Poets, playwrights, novelists and actors were asked for a personal response to an individual painting or poem. In the same year, Sir Terrance Conran commissioned Vettriano to create a series of paintings for Conran’s Bluebird Club in London. The seven paintings inspired by the life of Sir Malcom Campbell hung there for ten years. In 1998, Vettriano moved to London where he continued to have sell-out shows including, ‘Between Darkness and Dawn’, ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ and ‘Affairs of the Heart’. The year 2004 was exceptional in Vettriano’s career; his best-known painting, ‘The Singing Butler’ was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000; he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a Southbank show documentary, entitled ‘Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter’; Pavilion published a book ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ being an anthology of his work to date with text by Anthony Quinn. In 2008, Vettriano was commissioned to paint portraits of Sir Jackie Stewart and Zara Phillips, the latter was part of a charity fundraising project for Sport Relief, the experience of which was captured in a documentary broadcast on BBC One in March 2008. Vettriano launched Heartbreak publishing and his own gallery also called Heartbreak in 2009. In the same year, he was commissioned by the Yacht Club of Monaco to create a series of paintings to mark the centenary of their world-famous yacht Tuiga. The subsequent exhibition ‘A Hommage a Tuiga’ premiered in Monaco as part of Classic Yacht Week. In 2010, an exhibition of over 40 new paintings, ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ was opened at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in Fife. The exhibition then moved to London, opening at Heartbreak in September 2010. In September 2013, a major exhibition, ‘Jack Vettriano: A Retrospective’ opened at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It featured over 100 works and ran until February 23 2014. It attracted 123,300 visitors and broke the attendance records held by a Van Gogh exhibition in 1948. Vettriano sold his gallery in London in 2015 and later that year established his own publishing company: Jack Vettriano Publishing. Limited. In 2017, He was one of three artists commissioned to paint portraits of Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. These were then put on display in Glasgow People’s Palace, while images were transferred to murals in the centre of Glasgow. It was the subject of a BBC documentary first broadcast on June 14, 2017.

Note: Alan Baxter Hayman was born in Montrose in 1947. Although he had no formal training he has developed his technical skills and knowledge through his own study of the landscape and wildlife, and through this process has honed remarkable painting skills. Painting is his life and he believes he was born to paint, even teaching himself taxidermy to achieve a better understanding of the anatomy of the birds and animals which are portrayed in his work. After working as a commercial artist for 15 years, Alan moved to Glen Lyon in Perthshire where he painted in the magnificent surroundings and opened his own gallery. In 2008 he relocated to the small hamlet of Drimnin on the west coast of Scotland where he now has a large workshop and studio overlooking the Sound of Mull and Tobermory harbour. Living in this location, in the midst of abundant wildlife and epic scenery, Alan is able to be encapsulated by the subject and matter of what he paints. His landscapes and wildlife paintings are admired nationally and internationally for their distinct style and intricate detail and his work is held in corporate and private collections around the world.

* LADY LUCINDA MACKAY (SCOTTISH b. 1941), MADRID CITY CENTRE oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated '17 verso framed image size 41cm x 51cm, overall size 49cm x 59cm Exhibition label verso: 1 - 15 September 2018, The Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh Note: Artist and teacher, notably a draughtsman and painter of portraits, born in Sunninghill, Berkshire, brought up in the family home, Glenapp Castle, Ayrshire. Lady Mackay was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Inchcape, chairman of the shipping line P&O who also ran Inchape PLC and was director of many other companies. Lucy Mackay was educated in Switzerland, Cambridge and at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, 1960–5, under David Talbot Rice and William Gillies, graduating with a master’s honours degree in fine art. In 1973–4 she completed a postgraduate illustration studies year at the Central School of Art and Design. She settled in Edinburgh where she studied advanced botanic illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden, and where as a member of the Scottish Arts Club from 1983 she regularly attended life studies. Mackay began her extensive teaching career in 1966 as art assistant at Edinburgh Academy for Boys; from 1968–76 taught art, design and pottery at schools in the London area; then again in Edinburgh at the Salisbury Centre, 1981–2. In 1999 she joined the register of Angus County’s artists-in-residence for primary schools, serving at several schools. After winning first prize in a portrait painting competition run by the magazine Nursery World, 1953, and exhibiting a prize painting in the Daily Mail competition to celebrate the opening of the Forth Road Bridge, 1964, Mackay took part in many group shows, including the RSA. Among later solo exhibitions were The Italian Institute, Edinburgh, 1991; Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh, 1995, 1998 and 2005; and The Forum, Ocean Terminal, Leith, in aid of the Bethany Trust, 2004. She travelled extensively in several continents with paints and sketch-book. As well as a series of self-portraits Mackay completed many portraits, including Ronald Fletcher, broadcaster, 1968; the Queen’s Counsel Lionel Daiches, 1979–80; singer Ian Caddy, 1980–1; Professor David Daiches with his brother Lionel, 1988–9; the composer and conductor Emre Araci, 1997; and cellist Harriet Johnson, 2000. Her work was held by collections including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; London College of Music; Royal Over-Seas League; Scottish Arts Club; Barlinnie Prison; and Geffrye Museum.

* STEPHEN FRENCH (SCOTTISH b. 1953), BROUGHTY FERRY, STILL WATERS acrylic on board, signed, titled verso framed image size 22cm x 69cm, overall size 35cm x 82cm Note: Stephen French is a Dundee and Kilchoan based artist who likes to keep his work eclectic and to stay open to new directions, so subjects and media are always morphing. Yet his technique, palette and composition remain consistent. He enjoys combining traditional painting skills with a subversive take on artists’ clichés but with the overall imperative of visual decoration. Born in Clydebank in 1953, Stephen went to Dundee Art College and graduated BA in Drawing and Painting in 1975 and then in 1976 received the Greenshields Award to study painting in Paris. He went on to have an extremely successful career in design, winning two Design Centre Awards. He was a consultant with The Design Council and became a member of Memphis Milano. Becoming disenchanted with the industry, he returned to painting full time and has gone on to exhibit at the Pompidou Centre, Tokyo Museum of Art, the Barbican and the Victoria and Albert Museum. His work is also regularly exhibited at galleries around Scotland.

Stambois, Private Collection Stanley Mann, Private Collection (purchased from the above in 1961) By descent to his wife, Eithne Maureen Mann (nee Milne), Private Scottish Collection. Note 1: One of the most important and influential British artists at work in the twentieth century, David Bomberg was born in Birmingham in 1890. Initially studying art in London at the City and Guilds, David Bomberg was to study under the highly respected Walter Sickert at the Westminster School of Art, subsequently gaining a place at the Slade School of Art. It was here that David studied under the famous Henry Tonks, alongside such soon-to-be-famous names as Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson and Paul Nash. The Slade was hugely important in the development of David’s work, but that didn’t prevent him from expulsion in the summer of 1913. Flirting, rather acrimoniously, with the Bloomsbury Group, David was to eventually form ties with the Camden Town Group, subsequently becoming a founding contributor to the London Group in 1914. After returning from active service in the First World War, David Bomberg took on a number of teaching positions, no less notable than his leading role in the Borough Group, where he was to teach and become a driving influence of a young Frank Auerbach. What followed was to become recognised as David’s “golden era” of work. Spells living abroad in Spain were to inspire some of his most well regarded works. David died in Spain in 1957, leaving a body of work and influence that is as relevant today as it was then. Following his death, David’s reputation continued to grow, with many retrospective exhibitions held, including at the Tate in 1988. David Bomberg is rightfully regarded as one of the leading lights of the twentieth century Modern British art world, and arguably one with the greatest influence on generations of artists to follow. Note 2: The face in the “Portrait of a Gentleman”, is unknown but shows a warmer in colour and sense of energy. The handkerchief thrusts out of his pocket with a sense of purpose or perhaps importance. The pale pigment applied so freely around his head adds to this feeling, and there may even be a hint of a smile in the curve of his lips. Perhaps he is sharing a joke with Bomberg, but the light heartedness ultimately seems fleeting. Bomberg was appointed Official war artist during the second world war and only completed one commission “”Underground Bomb Store 1942”, given that this portrait was completed in the same year there could be a connection to the artist in this role.

* JACK VETTRIANO (SCOTTISH b. 1951), DRIFTERS limited edition silkscreen print on paper, signed and numbered 21/295, from the Affairs of The Heart Collection, 2004 mounted, framed and under glass image size 50cm x 40cm, overall size 89cm x 78cm Note: Jack Vettriano was born in Fife, Scotland in 1951. After leaving school at 15, he followed his father down the mine, working as an apprentice engineer. He later moved on to white-collar jobs in management services. Vettriano took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s when a girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his birthday and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. He learned his craft by copying Old Masters, Impressionists, Surrealists and a plethora of Scottish artists. Prior to moving from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh, he decided to mark a break with his past work which hitherto had been sold under his family name Hoggan. From this time on, he adopted his mother’s maiden name. The turning point came in 1988 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition; both were sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries. He held his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Gallery in 1992 entitled ‘Tales of Love and Other Stories’ and later that year, he exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London. He was represented by Portland Gallery from 1994-2007 and during this time, he had many sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York and counts Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Fergusson and Sir Tim Rice amongst his collectors. In 1996, Pavilion books commissioned W. Gordon Smith to compile an anthology, ‘Fallen Angels’, in which over 40 Vettriano images were accompanied by a selection of Scottish writing. Poets, playwrights, novelists and actors were asked for a personal response to an individual painting or poem. In the same year, Sir Terrance Conran commissioned Vettriano to create a series of paintings for Conran’s Bluebird Club in London. The seven paintings inspired by the life of Sir Malcom Campbell hung there for ten years. In 1998, Vettriano moved to London where he continued to have sell-out shows including, ‘Between Darkness and Dawn’, ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ and ‘Affairs of the Heart’. The year 2004 was exceptional in Vettriano’s career; his best-known painting, ‘The Singing Butler’ was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000; he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a Southbank show documentary, entitled ‘Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter’; Pavilion published a book ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ being an anthology of his work to date with text by Anthony Quinn. In 2008, Vettriano was commissioned to paint portraits of Sir Jackie Stewart and Zara Phillips, the latter was part of a charity fundraising project for Sport Relief, the experience of which was captured in a documentary broadcast on BBC One in March 2008. Vettriano launched Heartbreak publishing and his own gallery also called Heartbreak in 2009. In the same year, he was commissioned by the Yacht Club of Monaco to create a series of paintings to mark the centenary of their world-famous yacht Tuiga. The subsequent exhibition ‘A Hommage a Tuiga’ premiered in Monaco as part of Classic Yacht Week. In 2010, an exhibition of over 40 new paintings, ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ was opened at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in Fife. The exhibition then moved to London, opening at Heartbreak in September 2010. In September 2013, a major exhibition, ‘Jack Vettriano: A Retrospective’ opened at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It featured over 100 works and ran until February 23 2014. It attracted 123,300 visitors and broke the attendance records held by a Van Gogh exhibition in 1948. Vettriano sold his gallery in London in 2015 and later that year established his own publishing company: Jack Vettriano Publishing. Limited. In 2017, He was one of three artists commissioned to paint portraits of Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. These were then put on display in Glasgow People’s Palace, while images were transferred to murals in the centre of Glasgow. It was the subject of a BBC documentary first broadcast on June 14, 2017.

* DAVID COOK (SCOTTISH b. 1957), MINT TEA oil on canvas, signed, titled verso framed image size 60cm x 95cm, overall size 76cm x 110cm Note: David Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline and attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1979-84. He was recognised early as an exceptional talent, winning the first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989. He has exhibited irregularly but notably at The Traverse Theatre in 1982 and with the 369 Gallery throughout the following decade. In the 1990s he was already visiting "Seagreens" (his current home) and staying at a cottage at Benholm, two miles to the North also frequented by Alberto Morocco and Ian Eadie. Cook travelled regularly in these years to Turkey, the Balearics and significantly, at the invitation of the Everard Reed Gallery, to Southern Africa for three months in 1997. He was able to secure the tenancy at Seagreens shortly after his return and eventually bought it in 2004. Joan Eardley worked at Catterline, just eleven miles to the north of Seagreens and like Eardley sixty years earlier, David Cook feels the emotional draw of the sea and the wildness of the coastal environment. This sense of belonging is now deeply embedded; he can see the seasons change and paint the whole calendar; the daffodils of Spring, wild flowers of Summer, the Autumn skies and bleak drama of Winter are all on show: immediate, raw and compelling. David Cook is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent solo show there was "Forged by the Sea" 29th June - 22nd July 2023. His known public collections include: The City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee Art Gallery & Museums, Dunfermline District Museum, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Kirkcaldy Museum & Gallery, Knysna Fine Art (South Africa), The Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee, University of Warwick, Art in Healthcare and in corporate collections in the UK. Recent prices for David Cook's paintings in our auctions in 2024 include sales of £480, £550 and £800. Condition of the picture is good overall, with no visible or known issues.

* RALSTON GUDGEON RSW (SCOTTISH 1910 - 1984), SEA TROUT watercolour on paper, signed mounted, framed and under glass image size 30cm x 46cm, overall size 52cm x 67cm Note: Ralston Gudgeon was a Scottish artist, best known for painting birds and animals mostly in gouache watercolour. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art in 1933 and won the Torrance Memorial Award of the Glasgow Institute. When Ralston Gudgeon was elected to the RSW in 1937, he became the youngest man ever to achieve that honour. In 2018, "The Scottish Wild Cat" by Gudgeon sold in our auction for £900 (hammer) which "signposted" a resurgence of collector interest in his work. This resurgence of buyer interest has continued unabated.

He is a graduate of Leeds College of Art. In 1965 John was founder member of Leeds 'Sweet Street Group' - bringing art into industry. He exhibited in the Leeds City Art Gallery (one man show) and The Austin Hayes Gallery in York in 1967 and 1968. After teaching art for two years he left Leeds and moved to Newcastle upon Tyne where he became a freelance illustrator for the Sunday Sun Newspaper. From 1971 he found himself involved with the Entertainment Industry on the management side. This carried him over to Australia where he also exhibited paintings in Sydney between 1972 and 1974. He returned to England and Newcastle upon Tyne where he worked in promoting and organising Arts Festivals and exhibiting locally. In 1984 he returned to teaching art. In 1989 he went on holiday to the West coast of Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. This began a love affair resulting with a period of painting which still continues to this day. He exhibits frequently in Edinburgh and since 2000 in London's West End. John Watling's paintings are landscapes of the West of Scotland and Ireland. The Scottish paintings are mainly of the island of Iona where he finds inspiration for the almost Celtic strata of the rocks against the white sands and the oddly shaped islands off the coast. The paintings have a surreal look about them, which he says reflects his feelings about the island. His paintings of the West Coast of Ireland are mostly of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway which to him have a timeless feel about them. His main interest is in the dry stonewalls which cover the islands like an enormous maze. His paintings are in oil and watercolour. He paints mainly in his studio from sketches and photographs rather than in 'situ'. This is because of the frequent light changes which can alter by the minute in the areas where he draws inspiration from. He is a prolific painter and has a large number of admirers and investors throughout the British Isles. He has paintings which are in collections in Britain, Ireland, USA, Europe, Australia and Canada.

* JANE DUCKFIELD (BRITISH 1944 -2016), POPPIES & THE HARVEST acrylic on board, signed, titled verso framed and under glass image size 61cm x 61cm, overall size 80cm x 79cm Note: Jane was born and educated in Yorkshire. She later trained at the Forgan Arts Centre and Dundee College, she was described by an art critic at her first exhibition as 'painting tumbling landscape in sonorous tones'. Many years residence in rural Fife and love of Scotland provide an abundance of both. She exhibited regularly at galleries in Braemar, St Andrews, Cupar, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Dundee and Kirkcaldy, where she was selected in both 1996 and 1997 for a Shell Expo Award at the Fife Artists' Exhibition. The judges observed 'A beautiful familiarity with the landscape'. Jane was also a great favourite at The Pittenweem Art Festival for many years. Paintings by Jane Duckfield have now travelled to most parts of the world, from America to Australia, but family holidays are taken in the beautiful Highlands and Islands of Scotland, which feature strongly in her work.

As a child she discovered the paintings of Rodney Matthews and Roger Dean on album covers and posters, and admired their ability to create a whimsical version of ordinary things. At school, Salvador Dali was an artistic influence, and she was lucky enough to get up close to several of his paintings in the MoMA in New York. As a huge music fan, Gail briefly studied sound engineering after deciding she did not want to go to Art school (despite preparing a portfolio). However, she continued to paint while working and raising her two children, and decided to become a self-employed artist in 2011. For artworks where specific locations are featured, Gail uses photographs to help with initial building placement, but will manipulate and change the structures to provide the most pleasing composition. This manipulation is not only helpful when hiding some of the less attractive features of a scene, but allows her to enhance features which might normally be overlooked. Painting on either stretched canvas or canvas board, Gail will usually cover the whole area with a theme colour which dictates the overall mood of the finished piece. She will then sketch in the main features of the painting using pastel pencil, moving the lines with a wet paintbrush until the desired positioning is achieved. The painting is built up from there. Gail's work is exhibited widely at numerous galleries in Scotland.

Her mystical and beguiling landscapes offer great insight into the career of this prolific artist. Born into impoverished conditions in Gourock, Low studied at the Glasgow School of Art during the Second World War before going on to study briefly under James Cowie at Hospitalfield House. Low had a great love of Scottish landscapes and they are a typical theme in her oeuvre - notably of Orkney where she spent numerous summers with her family in Hoy. By the 1960s her works moved further into abstraction, and she is best known for her works in this style. After her studies, Low co-founded the Clyde Group with J.D. Fergusson in 1942. With this group, Low co-organised Glasgow's first open air exhibition in 1956 at the Botanical Gardens. In 1963, she went on to open the New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow with John Taylor and Cyril Gerber, which received great critical acclaim for encouraging contemporary art in Scotland. Throughout her career she exhibited widely - including a retrospective of her work in 1985 at the Third Eye Centre (now the Centre for Contemporary Arts), and her work is held in numerous public and private collections.

* DAVID COOK (SCOTTISH b. 1957), CANDLE & BIRDCAGE oil on board, signed, titled verso framed image size 57cm x 100cm, overall size 69cm x 113cm Note: David Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline and attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1979-84. He was recognised early as an exceptional talent, winning the first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989. He has exhibited irregularly but notably at The Traverse Theatre in 1982 and with the 369 Gallery throughout the following decade. In the 1990s he was already visiting "Seagreens" (his current home) and staying at a cottage at Benholm, two miles to the North also frequented by Alberto Morocco and Ian Eadie. Cook travelled regularly in these years to Turkey, the Balearics and significantly, at the invitation of the Everard Reed Gallery, to Southern Africa for three months in 1997. He was able to secure the tenancy at Seagreens shortly after his return and eventually bought it in 2004. Joan Eardley worked at Catterline, just eleven miles to the north of Seagreens and like Eardley sixty years earlier, David Cook feels the emotional draw of the sea and the wildness of the coastal environment. This sense of belonging is now deeply embedded; he can see the seasons change and paint the whole calendar; the daffodils of Spring, wild flowers of Summer, the Autumn skies and bleak drama of Winter are all on show: immediate, raw and compelling. David Cook is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent solo show there was "Forged by the Sea" 29th June - 22nd July 2023. His known public collections include: The City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee Art Gallery & Museums, Dunfermline District Museum, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Kirkcaldy Museum & Gallery, Knysna Fine Art (South Africa), The Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee, University of Warwick, Art in Healthcare and in corporate collections in the UK. He studied at Gray’s School of Art there, 1932–8, the following year travelling and studying on the continent. In 1942 he won the RSA’s Guthrie Award. From 1946–50 Morrocco was a part-time teacher at Gray’s School, becoming head of painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, from 1950. Won the Medaglio d’Oro, San Vito, Italy, in 1957. Morrocco was a member of Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and RSW and was elected RSA in 1962. As well as being a still life, portrait, figure and landscape painter he illustrated Lockhart’s Anatomy and painted murals for St Columba’s Church, Glenrothes, and Liff Hospital, Dundee. Morrocco was a decorative artist of great felicity, using a rich and varied palette. He had a British Council show in Aberdeen in 1949, others following at Compass Gallery in Glasgow, a retrospective at Dundee Art Gallery in 1981, a series at Thackeray Gallery, with a memorial at Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, 1999, and retrospective at Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh, 2002. RSA, Scottish Arts Council and many Scottish galleries hold his work. The painter Leon Morrocco was his son, his wife the artist Vera Mercer. Lived in Dundee, Angus. Eighty-seven of his paintings are held in UK public collections.

* TOM HUTCHESON RGI (SCOTTISH 1922 - 1999), CLYDE ESTUARY oil on board, signed, titled label verso framed and under glass image size 32cm x 26cm, overall size 42cm x 37cm Note: Tom Hutcheson enrolled at Glasgow School of Art for session 1941-42, and then volunteered for the RAF. He returned after the war to continue his studies from 1946-49, and graduated in drawing and painting. Among his tutors were Hugh Adam Crawford, David Donaldson, and Geoffrey Squire. Douglas Percy Bliss was then director. Tom taught very successfully in Glasgow junior secondary schools pioneering, along with Danny Ferguson and others, the new art teachers’ philosophy, which fostered creativity and imagination. In 1977, he was appointed Principal of Art Education at Jordanhill College, thus carrying on the work of Sam Black. From the outset, he was a dedicated painter, exhibiting publicly from 1949 onwards. His subject matter was invariably drawn from the landscape of the West of Scotland, with occasional forays to Skye or Spain. His love of the mining areas of Ayrshire and Lanarkshire furnished him with a steady stream of subjects which, as he matured as a painter, became more concerned with colour and texture, and less with topographical detail. In 1949 it was “Tanyard in Cumnock”. In 1989 it was “Earthscape in Mottled Green and Muted Reds”. He acknowledged this himself, stating: “Colour is, for me, the most important element in painting. But it should never be used solely in a decorative, anecdotal or descriptive manner. It is the element for expressing emotion and feelings.” His work is in many public and private collections at home and abroad, including those of the HM The Queen, arts councils, and the art galleries of Kelvingrove, Detroit, and Puerto Rico. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Glasgow Institute, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish Artists, and was a long time member of the Glasgow Art Club. Another Glasgow connection was with the Glasgow Group of Artists, whose annual exhibitions in June at the McLellan Galleries were, for many years, a regular feature of the art scene. Tom died suddenly on 1st November 1999 while collecting work at the close of the RGI exhibition – in sight of the Glasgow School of Art, where it all began over 50 years previously.

* TERRY OWEN MATHEWS (BRITISH 1931 - 2008) A SUNBIRD bronze sculpture, signed (T O Mathews) and numbered #1 (understood to be unique and not one of an edition) , dated 1998 34cm high Note: Terry Mathews was born in England in 1931, brought up in Uganda, and educated in Kenya and England. His life as a child in Uganda was enriched by his close association with his next-door neighbour, Captain Charles Pitman, the renowned Chief Game Warden of that country. With a family greatly involved in African wildlife, Mathews passion for animals transcended into his secondary profession as a sculptor. Despite losing sight in his lead eye, Mathews sculptures continued to evolve and grow into cast bronze pieces that captured the movement and freedom of the beloved wildlife he surrounded himself by. With his experience of being in the bush with wildlife on many photographic and collecting Safaris, Mathews was able to take the time to study animals and birds, enabling his pieces to take on a lifelike appearance despite the lack of anatomical research. Mathews believed that, “ The movement is more important than the anatomical detail .” Situated in Kenya, Mathew’s work was cast and finished in a foundry founded by his son. There, he was able to follow the casting process closely to ensure his sculpture embody the vision of his initial creation. Mathews also worked with well-known sculptors like John Skeaping, William Timym, Johnathan Kenworthy and Rob Glenn. Mathews work has been shown in Europe, Africa and the United States. Terry was a strong supporter of conservation organizations, having contributed many bronzes to a number of conservation organizations including: Game Conservation International (contributed ten bronzes), Friends of Conservation, Kuki Gallmann's Ranch, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Rhino Rescue, Rhino Ark, Kenya Wildlife Service, Nairobi National Park, East African Wildlife Society, Cullman & Hurt Community Wildlife Project (Terry was Vice Chairman for a number of years and contributed three bronzes ) and, World Wide Fund for Nature. In addition, he was on the Advisory Committee of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and in 1990 donated a full size Rhino Cow and Calf to act as a begging bowl for the Rhino Conservation Movement which now stands at the entrance to the Nairobi National Park. Later Terry was commissioned by the WWF and the East Africa Wildlife Society to build a monument to the burning of the ivory. The bronze was cast by Terry's son Denis in Nairobi and provided at cost. It now stands at the site of the original burning of the 12 tons of ivory.

* TOM MACKENZIE (SCOTTISH 1947 - 2018), CAMUS BHAN limited edition coloured etching on paper, signed, titled and numbered 24/30 mounted, framed and under glass image size 38cm x 50cm, overall size 57cm x 75cm Note: Tom MacKenzie was educated at Portree High School and at 17 left home to enrol at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee. This did not work out and after a year he went to London. His pursuit of art continued at evening classes in life drawing while working in a variety of jobs by day. In 1976 he moved back to Scotland, joining a team of many talents at the Glasgow Print Studio. John Taylor, a colleague and long-time friend, says: "Tom MacKenzie’s art was made from the Isle of Skye’s unique cornucopia of visual riches: the huge, notched and jagged coastline; sea lochs with many rocky islands; the Cuillins, the most awesome mountains in Britain." Living and working on the lovely Isle of Skye, Tom MacKenzie was renowned for his wonderful colour etchings of the island and the West Coast of Scotland. These large and very stylish etchings are appreciated and collected worldwide. Working from his studio and workshop in Portree, the island’s capital, Mackenzie used three steel plates to produce his etchings and limited the editions to 75 or less, printed on 300gm, Arches waterleaf paper. He was a very popular figure in Portree where he lived and worked and a much-respected artist throughout Scotland and far beyond.

* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), THE JAPANESE VASE gouache on paper, signed, titled label verso mounted, framed and under glass image size 54cm x 48cm, overall size 78cm x 71cm Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer) and in our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer).

* GORDON HOPE WYLLIE RSW (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2005), BUTE LANDSCAPE mixed media on paper, signed and dated '75, titled label verso mounted, framed and under glass image size 24cm x 46cm, overall size 50cm x 70cm Handwritten label verso. Note: Gordon Wyllie was born in Greenock and in 1949 was accepted to study at the Glasgow School of Art. Under the tutelage of such luminaries as Edward Odling and Mary and Willie Armour, Gordon distinguished himself, graduating in 1953 after an eminent final year. He was awarded the post-diploma, or Masters course, won the Scottish Academy Award and also the Newbery Medal, the school's most prestigious prize. This was all the more remarkable considering that Gordon had, in his diploma year, returned home to care for his father, whose seriously deteriorating health ended in death two months before the degree show, and Gordon himself had suffered a bout of pneumonia. With a scholarship award, he studied that summer at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, as a post-graduate under Ian Fleming. Fleming inspired Gordon and encouraged him in abstraction, with which he occupied himself for the next few years. Meanwhile, he trained at Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow to become a teacher, in the vanguard of the resurgence of art teaching in Scottish schools by the new art masters, undoubtedly because they painted actively while teaching full-time. Passionate about art education, he was instrumental in influencing many students to pursue a career in the creative industry. A former pupil aptly described his classroom as a "guided exploration rather than a formal lesson". His love of the Scottish countryside is mirrored in his work and undoubtedly stemmed from the bank of images he built when, as a youngster, he travelled with his parents around the country. Argyll and the Western Isles were his favourite destinations, where he was fascinated by the crofts and farms sprouting from the land. Small houses typified his landscapes and still-lifes included abstracted landscapes; flowers, particularly poppies, fruit and fish feature in his later output. In 1996, he was awarded the Alexander Graham Munro prize at the RSW exhibition in Edinburgh. His work featured regularly in one-man and combined shows and at his last one-man show in London in 2003, demand for his paintings remained high, as it has done ever since.

Some of her early work—influenced by Giacometti—was angular and menacing. During the 1960s her figures—typically horses and riders or male nudes—became smoother, but she retained a feeling of the bizarre in the polished goggles that feature particularly in her over-life-size heads. She worked mainly in bronze and had numerous public commissions, for example Horse and Rider (1975) in Piccadilly, London, made for Trafalgar House Investments Ltd. Later in her career she also did numerous portrait busts of distinguished sitters. In addition to sculpture she made prints and drawings.
