Johann Gottfried Edmund Koken (1814 Hanover - 1872 ibid) Tree-lined low mountain landscape with waterfall View of a rushing river, probably in the Harz Mountains, flanked on the right side of the picture by monumental, old oaks. Large-format, late-romantic masterpiece by Koken from the last year of his life. Koken studied from 1837 to 1841 at the Munich Academy under Carl Rottmann. He made his debut in 1836 at the spring exhibition of the Hanover Art Association, followed by numerous exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Dresden and Bremen. In 1841 Koken returned to Hanover and there he created with a preference for quiet landscapes, in which he was concerned with the poetic depiction of nature and atmospheric moods. From 1843/44 onwards, Koken depicted waterfall and Harz motifs several times, including the Walkenried monastery and the surrounding landscapes.
